Knitting meets social networking! Introducing the Holy Grail of knitting sites, and the future template for craft networking and possibly even personal information management online. If you love knitting, crochet, craft or are an organizational PIM nut -read on for the next big online social networking phenomenon.
I began sharing my interest in knitting at work, just before Christmas. I stumbled upon this common ground a few times in conversation and before I knew it, we had ourselves a little informal knitting group. There are five of us currently who spontaneously gather on the sofas at work to knit and talk about knitting. Its early days, but I was surprised at how quickly we found each other out and how immediately willing we all were to bring in some knitting and gather. Knitters are a social bunch and love to talk about their projects, show them off, sift through patterns, share resources, review what others are doing and they run a full spectrum of demographics. Knitters; and their recent huge resurgence of the craft over the last 3-5 years, are a major marketing gold mine. Social networking is the perfect tool to leverage the rich potential of this group. Welcome Ravelry.
One of the girls at work spoke to me about the new social networking knitting site called Ravelry. I almost couldn’t believe what she was telling me. This is a site that leverages all the potential of social networking and focuses it on fiber arts; primarily knitting. I went to their website and sifted through their screen shots and found an unbelievably well thought out online experience. The potential for this community is endless -this is going to be big. This is Big. This is the holy grail of knitting sites and could be the template for many a craft and interest niche to come.
Currently you must put your name on a waiting list of over 6 thousand to get your own user and pass to setup and start using the online community.
I am counting the days until I can see for myself the whole KNIT and caboodle.

Yeah… there’s an online social networking system for every niche these days… Just the other day, I was saying to my friend… there’s probably an x-rated version of Twitter out there… and true enough, he confirmed there is. Ah, someone always profits from understanding the dark anima of humans.
Ooh, the monkey. I like the monkey one. I have a collection of monkey stuff. [I think she means one of the books in my store?]
“Social networking” sites seems to be all the rage these days.
