Flickering out: compact flourescent bulbs

July 2nd, 2007

After very little research I found that there do seem to be issues with CFB’s. One thing for sure is there may not be enough information available about proper use and there is important information available that people should know about the care and use of their CFB’s.

Made inspiration.

May 13th, 2007

So often when i need inspiration i look to the internet to get me jump started. Its Mothers day and I have work to do on my computer before i go over to my Grandmothers place to celebrate. She turned 90 in February and she is such an important part of our family.Of course I got a bit side tracked with the creative meandering. I visited Make Magazine online. I hadn’t been in a while and found some really cool things to make. Read on ‘Made inspiration.’

Simple knit slippers done

May 8th, 2007

I have finally finished this UFO! (unfinished object) I started while learning to knit and finished the second slipper with a different cuff -one with rib and the second with seed stitch and i don’t care. They are cozy and i made em!!! They are not much to look at, but now i will knit prettier ones -since i have cut my teeth on these. They do knit up quickly and could be done in a weekend maybe if you are vigilant -certainly in a week.

I used a free pattern from the yarn store: Patton’s Free Leaflet pattern #304 Speedy Slippers to Knit. Sorry, but i could not find it online or i would have posted it here. I think I’ll try some crochet slippers next and maybe some felted knit slippers -for the next slipper project whenever that may be.

The closest patterns to this were at Knitting Pattern Central in the Slipper section
This is a cute pattern and so is this.

My roasted veggie quiche recipe

April 23rd, 2007

I love this recipe. It’s definitely not a vegan recipe, but it is vegetarian and loads of you omnivorous folks out there will love it too I assure you. I got the idea while roasting some of my favorite fall veggies a few years back. I roasted up some sweet potatoes; otherwise known more correctly as yams –pink flesh root veggies not white, parsnips, garlic, onions, turnip; small and white flesh, and rutabaga; large and orange flesh. Ya –I get squeamish using the term “flesh” but it’s apt.

I am describing the innards of these veggies because there is wide confusion over the proper terms for these. My gramma always referred to rutabagas as turnips and I don’t think she has ever eaten a real turnip. Also –many folks call yams sweet potatoes and also –haven’t eaten a real sweet potato –in these parts anyway. My photo is of this quiche cold -its great cold leftover with salad the next day too!

My take on a no pattern Granny Square formula

April 21st, 2007

I need simple in my life and I need simple in my creative life to really enjoy myself. So here is my approach to the simple, granny square. Firstly the granny square -at least my simple one, breaks down into corners, edges and spaces.

The corners of the square are made up of 2 clusters of double crochet with a space between them. The spaces are the spaces between clusters consisting of 1 chain. The sides are the sides of the square consisting on 1 chain. Simple?

So here is my approach to not looking at a pattern while crocheting these granny squares.

Growin Granny

April 19th, 2007

Ok -so I am getting the hang of granny squares. I was adding 2 single crochet between all clusters of 2 double crochet. The result was a bit bunchy looking. I ended up using one single crochet on the sides between clusters and then 2 between the clusters on the corners. I think I have it down now. I can really see how simple these would be for portable projects. The pattern is very simple to remember and once you get the hang of it -you can just keep going. The only thing I don’t like is that you have to tie off your yarn after each round. I would prefer to just continue with a variegated yarn. I have done 6 now, but the last 2 are the best looking. I am still learning how to keep a steady tension.

Now -hummmm what to do with these? I also seem to be growing unfinished projects.

Requiem

April 16th, 2007

When the last living thing
has died on account of us,
how poetical it would be
if Earth could say,
in a voice floating up
perhaps
from the floor
of the Grand Canyon,
“It is done.”
People did not like it here.

-Kurt Vonnegut

I enjoyed reading Breakfast of Champions when I was a young teenager and then read Galapagos . Both I found very funny, very sad and very insightful. I’ve always meant to read more by him. I likely will now that I am reminded of this interesting man –once again. This poem however may be the most apt and succinct piece I have read by this man. He left his mark and passed away on the 11th. And so it goes.
