Such is an enigmatic title for this knitting post. I lost my very first knit scarf before the holidays. It wasn’t much. It was very simple and made of second class, cheap acrylic fiber. It was my first knit item, my blue variegated scarf.
I loved this scarf. It was blue and went with my generally casual attire. It was long and had lots of fun fringe. It was warm and I could use its length to wrap it many times around my neck on cool bicycle rides to work.
I don’t know how it happened. I was just working away in my cubicle when I noticed it was not on its hook as it should be –with my coat. Maybe it was the forlorn stature of my naked coat that grabbed my attention. I retraced my steps, but no scarf anywhere. At first I thought I would find it and when a few days went bye, I knew I would never see that scarf again.
It’s difficult to explain, but knitting has been a very comforting addition to my life. Knitting is so simply distracting, meditative and methodical; something that brings with it predictability and stability and simple method along with blissful distraction when life gets painful. Knitting is simple-life.
That scarf along with its matching mittens was my sanity when Marty was terminally ill. I knit manically at all hours too afraid to sleep and not be there for that sick kitty. Knitting gave me that constructive distraction; a kind of doing that reading alone cannot provide and TV could not even begin to offer. That literal productive act was so simple and helpful beyond any expectation at the time. So –that scarf became a Marty memory that I held dear. I still have the mittens and I wear them every day currently.
Over the holidays I stayed with friends and while away from my home distractions I knit freely without any of the home distractions that can sometimes get in the way. Actually –knitting while “away” is one of the best pleasures –just like reading while “away” is and all other wonderful creative and spiritual acts. I completed 3 knit projects!
So –over the holidays I finished my green scarf. This scarf was taking forever to knit on small needles and it was a bit too wide as well. But with the addition of some fun blue ribbon stripes and some great fringe my scarf was finished with a bang! I have had complements even . So –this new scarf I now wear everywhere.
I also knit a nice dark gray mohair scarf and my friend Tim swiped it immediately! I guess it is his now.
And there is a fancy yarn shawl that I knitted very quickly. The thing is –this shawl had the funniest pattern!! I must photograph the actual pattern because it is so messed up you wouldn’t believe it if I just told you.Last but not least –I knit a flower. Even though I found a crochet pattern, I decided to knit one and it’s not too bad.
