I thought I would talk a bit about what Vegetarians and Vegans eat. I’m not getting political -no PETA talk here! But, I’ve noticed that many non-vegetarians/vegans really seem to struggle with what to feed their non-meat eating friends. Let me try to help.
OK -after the usual birdseed and salad jokes are done -there really ARE a lot of meal choices for us -really. Really, really.
I have a girlfriend who really struggles when I come for supper -to the point she actually says to me -”I’d invite you over, but I have no idea what to make for you”. I know many others also struggle with their vegetarian guests so here is some help.
Firstly -many people call themselves Vegetarian and still eat Fish -some also eat Chicken most also eat Dairy and Eggs. Of course it is important to make sure what, if any animal products your guest eats.
The Vegan
Lets start with the complete Vegan -no animal products whatsoever. I often eat this way for many reasons. I enjoy the variety it affords me. Yes -that’s really what I meant to say. By eliminating all animal products from meals -I really am forced to focus more on Fruits, Vegetables, Grains, nuts, seeds, cold pressed vegetable oils, nut butters and Legumes. I end up exploring more international uses for these foods, trying interesting flavour combinations and -honestly; I end up eating very healthy.
Many meat recipes can be altered to be vegetarian or vegan such as, lasagne, chilli, sheppard’s pie, moussaka even French Canadian Tourtiere (meat pie).
Think Multicultural Cuisine: African, Middle Eastern, Indian/Asian, Mediterranean. There are so many tasty recipes for non-animal proteins and vegetables. Focus on what you have not what you don’t have, because believe me you have a lot to choose from.
You can alter many meat recipes for vegans: chilli’s, pasta’s, soups and stews. But if you really want to explore -trust me, go multicultural!!! You -yes YOU will love the vegan recipes out there from around the world.
Go to The International Vegetarian Unions Website and VegWeb for LOADS of recipes so you don’t ever have to panic again!
