Crochet blanket

I am working on a crochet blanket to use up some yarn that I have. I am having the same trouble that I had when I started learning how to knit. I seem to increase slightly on one edge. I am getting better; however it is difficult to eyeball the edge and to crochet into the chain and not the “turning” chain. If anyone has any tips I am all ears! I am hoping this blanket will be good practice anyway. I an doing a double crochet with a large hook so this works up quickly, but it is rather loose and holey. Here is the blanket in progress. I may have to sew along one edge where I have increased a bit. In the end I plan on working a crab stitch around the edges so I can hide any small corrections I may make to the small increases in the right hand edge near the beginning of the piece. I ripped back several times and the last time I noticed the increase I noticed after I had worked more than I was willing to rip back. Any suggestions on correcting this issue would also be appreciated.

The plan is to make it alternating dark grey with the blue -blue-grey-grey-blue-grey-grey-blue-grey-grey-blue.
It’s all a part of the learning process and I am much more consistent as I continue.

I like it. I can see myself, all warm underneath that.

But of course, I don’t understand what it’s doing outside, hung over your wooden fence. Unless, of course, you’ve decided to take up knitting in freezing weather. :D

Thanks! -i just cannot get an good photo inside unless i have an item that is very small. I was hoping for a better photo outside -difficult to get the size of this blanket in a shot. Its still a poor photo, but you can get an idea of how large the blanket is. Its actually folded over here. The size is about 4 feet wide and will be about 6 feet long. Otherwise you get a folded up piece that has very little detail.
