This is for everyone out there who wants to start crocheting granny squares. They are beautiful and you can do so much with them -and they are easy!!
It took me awhile to get the hang of these myself, and mainly you have to get used to the feel and drape of the yarn you are using. I am still a relative beginner -so I still have to do a few practice squares before my fingers know what they are doing and they look nice and consistent from one to the next.
Here are my favorite resources for granny square inspiration and learning.
1) How To Video: Crochet Traditional Granny Square 5 Rounds
How To Videos: Left hand Traditional Granny Square
2) Blog tutorials: Granny Square tutorial from The Purl Bee
This tutorial is a bit different from my tutorial in that they recommend that you chain 1 between the clusters in the corners. I suggest that you chain 2, both work and I have used both methods to suite the yarn or my gauge. Sometimes I am crocheting very tight in which case a chain 2 works nicely and sometimes I find that a chain 2 creates a lumpy square so I use a chain 1. I think it depends on the yarn and its drape and your tension. Both can work. Blocking will also sort out the “Squareness” of your squares either way.
3) Blog posts: Great blog post about blocking granny squares. Posy Gets Cozy: Getting the Grannies to a Mellow-Groove
4) Etsy for inspiration: Have a look at Etsy and see what people are doing with simple granny squares
I see everything from bookmarks and earrings to jackets, hats and pillows
5) Flickr for inspiration: Also surf Flickr for beautiful granny square inspiration.
I think these are great resources -thanks so much for sharing!! All of them are great. I didn’t even think about looking on youtube for information. Thanks!!
I was wondering if you have ever seen anything like this http://www.intatters.com/showthread.php?834-Help-with-a-granny-square and may have the instructions for it.
thanks,
